The Neon Demon

How representative this film is of the world of fashion, I’m not sure. It does tell a story of an aspirational model who lands in LA from Georgia. She is told to lie about her age and given advice that people generally believe everything they are told. Her life is full of predators, some more deadly than others. The trouble is that when there are so many circling around you and showing interest, in one form or another, it’s difficult to interpret people’s motives. The film employs so many different techniques to tell the story; with different interpretations and layers within as well. There is as well a good deal of symbolism, surrealism, dream sequences and some pretty frightening menace and horrible people. It is difficult to know what is real and what we are being told to believe that is true.
